2008 Cubs

It's been proven that we get a little misty-eyed (and perhaps a tad too attached) when beloved sports figures leave Chicago, however, I'm still trying to figure out how this trade benefits the Cubs -- especially if a Peavey trade does not happen. Some have said that (like calling the top on a stock chart) Hendry is "selling high" on DeRosa and this is the best that we can get -- three pitching prospects for the 2009 DeRosa. But DeRosa could play any and all positions rather well! I'm stumped and it saddens me even more to hear this interview. Like DeRosa's Dad claims, all will be forgiven if we get Peavey!

Who would of thought that (of all the players on the Opening Day Roster) Scott Eyre would be in the World Series. For the past two seasons Scott has had a regular spot on The Score, and this seems like the farewell send-off. Scott congrats Jim Hendry, talks about the Phillies clubhouse, what he thinks of Charlie Manuel, his odd relationship with Lou Piniella, and the Cubs meltdown in the playoffs.

Lou claims that he is "still hurting from this damn thing" as he talks (on a dying cell phone - ba-deep) with WGN Radio 720. I love how he still calls Mike Fontenot the "little kid at second," but I do have to disagree with Lou's assertion that the Cubs played a "good game" in Game 3. Lou also talks about who he would like to have back on the roster (no big surprises), the plane trip home from L.A., and he concludes by giving advice to Cubs fans during the winter months.

Steve ends his weekly Chicago baseball chat with Boers & Bernstein on 670 The Score. It's clear that Stoney has no love for Harden, Soriano, Crane Kenney's decision for a Greek Orthodox Priest to spread Holy Water in the Cubs dugout, Lou's NLDS lineup, and the thinking that this entire roster should be brought back for 2009. Get ready for some more offseason drama as Stoney believes that the Cubs (along with the White Sox) will heavily go after Brian Roberts again.

Bill Murray appeared on Letterman a couple nights ago and wondered aloud why the "new" (i.e. post 2003) Cubs fans Boo -- his Cubs comments start about 6:30 into the video. I give Bill a ton of credit for actually showing up at a number of regular season games instead of suddenly appearing at playoff time like the Jim Belushi celeb types. All of us have seen Bill sitting in the seats in Florida, New York, Rig-A-Lee, etc. all throughout the year. Now, I am not a "new" Cubs fan (my die-hard days started in 1982), but in an upcoming post I will attempt to explain to Bill why Cubs fans Boo. Till then, check out what Bill has to say and offer your comments ...

LEN KASPER on 670 with Boers & Bernstein

by MCF on October 14, 2008

Len Kasper was listening to sports radio while driving around Chicago and (as he does from time to time) called in to talk with Boers & Bernstein on 670 THE SCORE about the Cubs moving forward after being swept.  Hey, how can you not like Len?!?!  Unlike the Joe Buck types who turn off baseball once they get home, Len listens to sports radio and many times will offer his commentary and insight.

Are there any other ways that Eddie Vedder can possibly express his man-love for the Cubs? Eddie regularly shows up at Cubs Fantasy Camp, he sings "Take Me Out The Ball Game" whenever asked, and of course (at the urging of Mr. Cub himself, Ernie Banks) he has written the latest Cubs anthem. "All the Way" is not a step-by-step guide on getting to second base with Kerry Wood, rather it is a drinking song to praise all that is sacred about being a Cubs fan while lamenting the Cubs' postseason woes. At some point (as in, once I find it) I will put up the original live version that Eddie gave in 2007 to a Pearl Jam fan club only concert at The Vic. Till then, here is the YouTube version along with a few extras ...

Jeff Samardzija joins Waddle & Silvy on ESPN Radio 1000 to discuss his first year with the Cubs and his excitement about coming back strong in 2009. Samardzija also talks about his late season control problems, whether he would like to be a starter or a closer, his football days at Notre Dame, and who broke the dugout pipe at Dodger Stadium.
